A Place Called Home
Design for a new flagship campus at the Magic Johnson Park for Los Angeles based youth community arts and resource center, A Place Called Home
This project took into account several site-specific factors as well as programming and usage necessities for the center. I drew upon the local Watts Towers as a beacon for youth creativity and interactive and malleable building forms and represented it in the steel structural component throughout.
In this project, I wanted to explore communal gathering spaces of expansive steps on the main level and the transformative usage of the voids of the building masses into gallery spaces and student art studios. The steel facade details become an integral part of the overall design; using the sculptural elements of exterior to showcase student work, create shade structures, and integrate APCH branding within the building form.
